Community Investment
Prospect Medical Holdings is committed to investing in the hospitals to benefit the communities in which they serve. Our goal with these investments is to support healthier communities and improve individual health outcomes.
We implement continuous upgrades and additions to our facilities in terms of infrastructure and technology, which in turns helps to improve the patient experience and access to care. Our investments also support the local workforce by sustaining employment and creating new jobs.
Many of our hospitals are safety-net hospitals, which ensures medical care is provided in underserved communities. In addition, community-focused health improvement activities and provisions of charity care play a role in helping individuals—particularly those from disadvantaged population groups—live healthier, more productive lives.
All in all, our deep community connections and other unique assets to benefit both our hospitals and the community at large. Below are some examples of our commitment to caring for our communities.
California Hospitals
To meet the growing need for expanded heart disease treatment in West Los Angeles, Southern California Hospital at Culver City invested in a new catheter lab, which opens in 2022. On average, someone dies of cardiovascular disease every 36 seconds in the United States and the hospital’s continued investment in its Heart Institute ensures residents have access to state-of-the-art care.
With its strategic location in Los Angeles, the hospital launched the Transgender Surgery Center of California, to handle the growing need for gender confirmation surgery. The hospital’s close proximity to LAX airport and hotels means the program is becoming a destination for those in the Western U.S. seeking this type of transformation.
As the only hospital in Culver City, the hospital is also expanding its emergency care with a new state-of-the-art emergency department set to open in summer of 2022.
The hospital is also the first in Los Angeles to provide joimax® endoscopic spine surgery technology, which eliminates the need to cut or damage healthy tissue to access a compressed nerve. The hospital also was the first hospital in California to invest in the Optimizer® Smart system for treating patients with chronic, moderate-to-severe heart failure.
Prospect Medical Holdings invested in Tustin’s only hospital by rescuing it from bankruptcy and remodeling it to ensure the renamed Foothill Regional Medical Center continued to serve central Orange County residents, including continuing to operate one of only a handful of pediatric subacute units in California. The remodel included infrastructure and technology investments, including new OR equipment, and new beds and bedding for patient rooms. The 6-year-old hospital continues to make annual investments, including growing a nationally recognized orthopedic and center of distinction bariatric programs.
By acquiring and investing in the hospital, Tustin’s only paramedic-receiving emergency department continues to provide lifesaving care for area residents. To give back, the hospital regularly provides charitable support to the Orange County Rescue Mission and Tustin Police Foundation.
To address the growing need for mental health services, our California behavioral health network includes more than 160 beds in Van Nuys, Culver City and Bellflower using an integrative mental health approach.

Connecticut Hospitals
Prospect Medical Holdings invested in Eastern Connecticut Health Network (ECHN) in 2016. Today, it is a community healthcare system serving 19 towns in eastern Connecticut. Its network of affiliates includes Manchester Memorial Hospital, Rockville General Hospital, Woodlake at Tolland Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, ECHN Medical Group, Women’s Center for Wellness, Visiting Nurse & Health Services of CT, Eastern Connecticut Cancer Institute, and more.
Recently, ECHN expanded its investment in the community by partnering with DispatchHealth, a provider of in-home medical care, to bring patients same-day, in-home medical care. This partnership enables the Connecticut health systems to provide their patients a new way to receive convenient medical care in the comfort of their own homes.
Prospect Medical Holdings' investment has extended to mammography services and the system’s Women’s Center for Wellness has been named one of America’s Best Mammogram Imaging Centers by the Women’s Choice Award®.
The health system also has invested in stroke care. Manchester Memorial Hospital received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®–Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. This award recognizes the hospital’s commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.
ECHN also operates one of only nine Screening Centers of Excellence by the Lung Cancer Alliance. The investment in low-dose CT screening technology for lung cancer is carried out safely, efficiently and equitably and can save tens of thousands of lives each year.
ECHN’s gives back to the communities it serves through charitable contributions, free use of hospital space, free medical care, and equipment donations to numerous not-for-profit community organizations.
Waterbury HEALTH is a vital healthcare resource in Waterbury, CT, not only as a hospital, but also a teaching hospital. Its investment in the community extends to emergency care, with an average of 55,000 visits a year, and 23,000 outpatient behavioral health visits. As the second-largest employer in the area, the hospital ensures continued investment in community care and employment.
Its most recent investment in technology is an expansion of its cardiovascular program with the addition of an advanced, less-invasive surgical procedure to repair damaged aortic valves. The hospital is the only one in the greater Waterbury area to offer this surgical alternative to traditional open-heart surgery—known as transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)—or people with severe aortic stenosis, a potentially fatal condition in which the opening of the aortic heart valve narrows, blocking the flow of blood to the body.
Uniquely, Waterbury Hospital has invested in caring for those with asthma and allergies as the only Pollen Count Center in New England that is certified by the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology’s National Allergy Bureau. The pollen count report is compiled every weekday. Scientists from the Waterbury Hospital Hematology Laboratory collect and report pollen data on trees, grass and weeds pollen and as well as mold spores.
The hospital recently brought sophisticated hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery to patients in the greater Waterbury area by recruiting a specialist in this area and meeting a need for these services.
In terms of cardiac care, Prospect Medical Holdings' investment in the hospital coronary program has resulted in national recognition. Waterbury Hospital is 5-star rated for Coronary Interventional Procedures (PCI) outcomes, making it the only hospital in New Haven County, CT to achieve 5-Star for PCI in 2021, as named by Healthgrades. Waterbury Hospital also received the Lifeline® Gold Receiving Quality Achievement Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association for the treatment of patients who suffer severe heart attacks.
In addition, Waterbury HEALTH supports more than 100 community organizations and non-profit organizations in the greater Waterbury area. In 2020 alone, Waterbury HEALTH spent over $11 million on community benefits and $24,000 on community building.
Pennsylvania Hospitals
Crozer Health invests in hospitals, medical groups and, as the largest employer in Delaware County, employment. As a valuable healthcare resources, Crozer Health operates four hospitals and four outpatient centers. The Crozer Health Medical Group also is Delaware County’s largest network of providers and practices.
Recent investments to provide area residents with the latest in technology, include Crozer-Chester Medical Center acquisition of the da Vinci XI Surgical System that provides additional options for surgeons in completing the complex surgeries performed at CCMC. This expands the number of patients who can benefit from the advantages of robotic surgery, such as smaller incisions, less blood loss during surgery, fewer complications, and shorter recovery period.
Taylor Hospital opened its new outpatient entrance, which offers patients complimentary valet parking and easy access to medical services, and expanded the patient parking area.
The Crozer Health medical staff recently awarded four $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors in Delaware County who have a passion for helping others and are planning to study healthcare as a career in college.
Thoracic surgery patients can now use Crozer Health’s new digital patient engagement technology for guidance and remote monitoring at home. Patients are virtually support with SeamlessMD, a digital patient engagement platform, keeping patients safe, connected, and less likely to be readmitted. Crozer Health is the first health system in Pennsylvania to implement this technology to advance its thoracic surgery program and the first in the nation to digitally support patients undergoing robotic bronchoscopy procedures.
Prospect Medical Holdings' investment in Crozer-Chester Medical Center stroke program benefits residents through its Comprehensive Stroke Center certification. This is the highest possible stroke certification, issued to fewer than 200 hospitals across the country, and Crozer-Chester Medical Center is the first Comprehensive Stroke Center in Delaware County, PA.
The stroke designation was in partnership with the Global Neurosciences Institute (GNI). GNI was created in 2017 by combining the high acuity capabilities of Delaware County’s Crozer Health with the clinical expertise of GNI, has been recognized for a number of milestones since its inception and elevated the neurosciences care for area residents.
The hospital system also has made investment in the area infants. Crozer Health’s Department of Pediatrics at Crozer-Chester Medical Center has made the 2020 Hepatitis B Vaccine Birth Dose Honor Roll from the Immunization Action Coalition. The Honor Roll requires a hospital to exceed 90% of newborns receiving the “birth dose” of the Hepatitis B vaccine series while still in the hospital. Hepatitis B can cause liver disease and, in severe cases, irreversible liver failure, liver cancer, or death.
CROZER'S 2022 COMMUNITY REPORT
Rhode Island Hospitals
CharterCARE Health Partners has invested in creating an innovative regional coordinated health care network, anchored by Roger Williams Medical Center and Our Lady of Fatima Hospital. The network includes the Roger Williams Cancer Center, Southern New England Rehabilitation Center, Blackstone Valley Surgicare, a home health care program and much more.
To ensure area residents access to latest in spine surgery advancements, CharterCARE invested in Excelsius GPS robot, which provides spine surgeons with the precision required in spine surgery. CharterCARE is the only provider in the Providence, RI, metropolitan area to make this technology available.
To provide state-of-the-art cancer care, Prospect Medical Holdings invested in the most advanced radiation oncology treatment technology—the Versa HD linear accelerator—at Roger Williams Medical Center. This investment ensures Rhode Islanders have access to all modalities of cancer care, including surgical, medical and radiation oncology and bone marrow replacement therapy.
To give back to the community, the health system is actively investing in local charitable initiatives, including the Special Olympics, services for the homeless, the Rhode Island Free Clinic, Progresso Latino, and Access Point Rhode Island, which serves children and adults with developmental disabilities.
